Athlon Sports Picks Florida State #4 Overall

Florida State’s players, coaches and fans are confident this program is on the cusp of a return to national prominence, but those dreams will be tested during a crucial two-game stretch in late September. First, the Seminoles will play host to an Oklahoma team that simply dismantled them last year in Norman, Okla. Then, they will go on the road one week later to face Clemson, which always seems to give them fits; FSU hasn’t won at Death Valley since 2001.

A loss in either game will feel like a major setback, but the Seminoles still would have a strong chance to improve upon last season’s 9-3 regular season.

Braves Agree to Terms With Top Pick Sean Gilmartin

Sean Gilmartin

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves today signed their first-round selection (28th overall) in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, left-handed pitcher Sean Gilmartin from Florida State University. Gilmartin arrived to the Braves facility at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex today to begin a throwing program.

Gilmartin, a 6-2, 195 pound left-handed pitcher, was a first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection after going 12-1 with a 1.83 ERA (23 ER/113.1 IP) in 17 games (16 starts) for Florida State University in 2011. Ranked by Baseball America as the 16th-best college pitcher in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, he paced Seminole hurlers in wins (12), strikeouts (122) and innings pitched (113.1). His 12 wins were tied for most in the ACC, while his 122 strikeouts were good for third.

“Sean is quality left-handed pitcher with great makeup and an excellent selection of pitches,” said Tony DeMacio, the Club’s director of scouting. “We think he’ll move fast through our system and we are real happy to reach an agreement. Sean is certainly a great addition to the Braves family.”

Gilmartin was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 31st round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, but did not sign. The Moorpark, California, native went 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA (5 ER/10.1 IP) in four appearances (one start) for the 2010 Team USA Collegiate National Team.
